Piano Teaching

Experience

I began teaching piano in 1978, when I entered my first students for ABRSM examinations. I have certainly learned a great deal since then, from my colleagues, both teachers and musicians and of course from the students themselves. Everyone learns differently and it is useful to have a wide range of approaches and methods at one's disposal.
I have taught privately but also in schools and specialist music schools, such as the Centre for Young Musicians in London. My pupils have ranged in age from 6 to 60 and beyond.

Style and Scope

I enjoy teaching absolute beginners, both young and old but am also happy to teach those who have learned previously or who might need a change of direction. I am happy to prepare students for examinations or to learn purely for enjoyment and will readily embrace different styles, including classical, jazz and pop. I am a patient teacher and am prepared to work at the appropriate speed for the learner. I often devise my own materials to help engage students or to overcome specific problems, such as co-ordination and reading.

Specifics

I can accommodate students at our home in Kirby Le Soken but will also travel within the area if it can be arranged conveniently, within a range of about ten miles. I am happy to teach from absolute beginners up to ABRSM grade VIII. My fee is currently £20 per hour and generally I teach for 30 minutes or an hour, but this is flexible.
